How do college acting auditions work?

In college, I want to major in theatre, but most schools put you through an acting audition. What would this audition be like? When would it be in the whole college applying spectrum? Are onsite auditions mandatory, like what if I'm applying to a school across the country? Any tidbit of information would be of great importance, thank you!
