In the aftermath of the fight, the Clanton family brought charges against Earp and his fellow participants. The trial was volatile; but while Earp was eventually cleared, his reputation was sullied. He later lost all of his holdings in Tombstone to pay fees and taxes and went to San Francisco. Later he moved to St. Louis, San Diego, and even tried his hand at gold prospecting during the Alaska Gold Rush. He eventually died at the age of 80 in Los Angeles.
